Guest Contributor Post…..This is a battered woman 101 class. The author creates a character with all the missed signs that this was happening to her until the actual physical abuse starts. She overlooks the gradual controlling tactics, the slow isolation of friends and family, the disparaging remarks and she actually starts to believe that’s really who she is. As is often the case, Alice, our character, believes the man she loved is still in there when the occasional generous act or remark happens.

Alice shows how hard it is to get out of the situation: it may require an instantaneous decision and the importance of knowing where to get help when you hit the limit. How to change your name, how you have to leave everything and everyone you loved in the dark because you fled, how your kids react. It’s all here.

This story had an interesting twist that offered her a golden opportunity. She inherited the estate of a distant uncle that would set her financially secure but this house comes with its history as well, and that when the real murder mystery part of the book starts and her new improved life is now in jeopardy as well.

It’s a life of constantly looking over your shoulder waiting to be found out, being afraid of every strange look or phone call, of ever trusting a man again and most of all shows how to regain your own personal strength from what you’ve experienced.

The narrator provided many voices to tell the story and provide the reader with the mental image to go with the voice.

Guest Contributor Post…..A friendship between Billie and Cassie that started in lower school was cemented forever with an incident that resulted in a tragedy that affected them forever. Cassie saw a problem for Bille and rectified it, and Cassie became the epitome of a friend and the holder of a secret.
In spite of this glue that held them together, the aspirations for their life sent them separate ways. And as friendships often do, their closeness diminished at least by one of the two. Cassie wanted upward on the social scene and this left Billie constantly hoping to renew what they once had.
There finally came a situation where Billie made a tragic, spur of the moment mistake. One where she wanted to punish Cassie for the times she was pushed aside for Cassie’s new job and friends. She tried to reverse this tragic error, lied to those that mattered but finally confessed to what she did.
Rather than prosecute her actions Cassie let it go.
Thus getting a “bye” and squaring up their past secret.
Now they could both move on without guilt .

It is hard for the reader to know who is to blame in this book, and the way that it is written is very masterful in that you don’t know what anyone’s secrets are, who they’re really keeping them from, or ultimately, who is at fault. This family has a lot of money, and with a lot of money comes a lot of problems, and they are no different. This is a great page turner of a mystery.

Teacher Post…..We are back in Maple Hills for the second in this series and while many of the characters are the same this book explores Russ and Aurora’s budding relationship. Both have so much traume in their past that it seems impossible they can make it work but a summer away at camp might just do the trick. Another fun page turner with just the right steam to seriousness ratio!🌶️🌶️
