"Where I’m From," by Grace O.

I am from hot and calm streets where I turn tan

From street vendors that wake me up in the Morning for pan dulce and tamales

I am from a bright and busy house

I am from the nice, beautiful marigolds, the strong stinky smell

I am from family functions and loud music

I am from “échale ganas” and “ponte las pilas”

I am from faith and going to church

From silent prayers

I’m from Mexico even tho I wasn’t born in Mexico

I am Mexican

From the tacos de birria and agua de horchata y jamaica

From the story of my parents coming to America for a better life

And the sound of children playing on the street

I am photo albums filled with memories

Memories of baby photos

Memories of my family before I was born

I’m from something i’m proud to be
